PROJECT RENEW

Since 1981, the Center for Adult Day Care has provided daily care for clients aged 18 or older who are physically and/or mentally disabled so their family members and caregivers may work or handle personal business. With PROJECT RENEW, we seek to upgrade and renovate to utilize our existing space better as our program continues serving and growing.

The Center for Adult Day Care is one of the Senior Center’s most successful and life-changing programs for our clients and their families. Their services are an alternative to institutional care when families need help caring for a loved one who should not be left alone.
The Center for Adult Day Care staff is committed to providing the following:

  • Safe, secure environment to spend all or part of the day.
  • Homelike space so clients are comfortable and relaxed.
  • Support family caregivers when needed.
  • Selected and appropriate physical exercise, health information, and social
interaction to improve mental and physical health.

Our members’ and clients’ safety and care are first and foremost, but we recognize that daily use has taken a toll on the entire facility – including the Center for Adult Day Care wing over the years. With PROJECT RENEW, we seek to upgrade and renovate to utilize our existing space better as our program continues serving and growing. And it has grown! Confident in the quality of leadership and programming offered by the fledgling Senior Center, the Department of Human Services asked the Senior Center in 1981 to take over their current adult day care program. Upon agreement, services were offered in one room in the Center’s building in Big Spring Park.
When the city built the current facility for senior programming on Drake Avenue in 1994, the building was designed to have designated space and safe outdoor access. The largest rooms were structured for social interaction with large windows for light and visibility. Over the years, spot repairs have been made.

In the past year, a small group project from Leadership Greater Huntsville flagship class 36 took on outside renovation. It addressed flooding and drainage problems, the lack of shade, uneven ground, and insufficient seating.

On the inside of the Center for Adult Day Care space, clarifying and improving four “Zones” will improve the current space overall, making it safer and client-friendly, and will make a noticeable and positive impact on present and future families.

The Zones are as follows:

Zone 1Check In/Check Out – Currently, the place where coats and other
possessions are kept is down the hall from the outside door. To have a place to hang
coats and such, a makeshift item was built. However, a better area (near the entrance)
with cubbyholes and a solid hanging area needed.

Zone 2 – Activity – Clients are enthusiastic about participating in activities so this zone
will be challenging. We have a donated pool table, an older TV, and tables for arts and
crafts. The current furniture has seen better days and some chairs have broken arms
and ripped seats.

An essential component of activities is simply materials storage. The staff organizes
monthly parties in addition to regular activities, and the storage room is haphazard and
inefficient. Floor-to-ceiling cabinets with doors would better use the wall space and
improve safety. The clean and tidy organization will be more relaxing and cheerful.

Zone 3 – Quiet Area – This zone isolates clients who become ill or disruptive or require
rest, privacy, observation, and supervision. We currently use the nurse’s office but want
to add music, a comfortable loveseat or sofa, and soft lighting to create a calm place
for the individuals.

Zone 4 – Kitchen Area – Food and snacks are eagerly anticipated daily. A sink with
short cabinets presently serves as the food prep area. The new Kitchen Zone will
include snack storage, a better refrigerator, and floor-to-ceiling cabinets for nonperishable
items. This area will also have a locking door and possibly a passthrough
window and counter.

To round off PROJECT RENEW, a fresh coat of paint in soothing colors will be applied
to all walls.
