Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels provides one nutritious meal Monday-Friday, year-round (some holidays excluded). The meals include an entrée, vegetable, fruit, bread, and milk. Volunteers deliver meals to the client’s home between 11:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. There is no charge, but a donation based on income is suggested. Menus are planned by a Registered Dietitian. We cannot offer special diet meals.
Our program delivers in the Huntsville city limits.  If you don’t live within the Huntsville city limits, please click HERE for your Nutrition Center.
Meals on Wheels serves Huntsville seniors age 60 or over, who are unable to cook for themselves, have no one available to cook for them, and are primarily homebound.
Criteria to receive meals are:
* Age 60 or over.
* Primarily homebound.
* Unable to cook for self because of health reasons.
* No one living with you to cook for you.
* Living in Huntsville city limits.  If outside city limits, contact one of the county nutrition centers

How to Volunteer for Meals on Wheels

1.  Adopt-a-route.  The Meal on Wheels Adopt-a-route program is an easy, yet effective way for companies, organizations, and churches to involve themselves in our local community. With as few as 4-5 people, a group can adopt a route and deliver meals one day a week. Or, 5 people could adopt 5 routes and deliver once a month.  Many participating groups feel the program improves camaraderie, by giving members the chance to work together on a project that serves the community. Please contact Lisa Allport, 256-382-0920, or mow.coord@seniorview.com, for additional information.
2.  Delivery Volunteer.  Join us as a driver and meet many wonderful homebound seniors we serve in the Huntsville community. Volunteers pick up meals at the Studio 60 Senior Center, Monday-Friday, between 10:45 and 11:00 a.m.  Deliveries could take up to 1-1/2 hours. You may deliver as often as you like, however, we ask for a minimum commitment of once a month. We currently have 22 routes throughout Huntsville. It takes over 500 volunteers a month to provide this service. If you would like to learn more see Volunteer Delivery Job Description or call Lisa Allport at 256-382-0920, or email at mow.coord@seniorview.com.
3.  Volunteer Substitute.  If you are willing to be a substitute driver – let us know; you can specify the days/routes when you will be available.  We will usually call no later than the day before we need you.  We understand you will not be available every time we call.  We appreciate the times you can fill in for someone else!

As a Meals on Wheels Volunteer, What am I Expected to do?

+ Deliver meals to a maximum of 14 clients/12 stops, once a month
+ Arrive on time at the Senior Center (between 10:45 and 11:00)
+ Pull up to the Meals on Wheels doors and tell the staff your name. They will give you your 2 carriers, plastic bags, and clipboard for your assigned route
+ Upon arrival at each residence, put the meal in a plastic bag, and hand to the client. Please don’t pack the bag before arrival! This could jeopardize food temperature and possibly affect food safety. Wear a mask!
+ Return to the Senior Center when you have completed your deliveries; report any clients who were not home or didn’t come to the door. Leave bags and clipboard outside double doors.
+ If you are unable to drive on your scheduled day, notify us no later than 24 hours in advance, so we can get a substitute for you. If you do not call, it will be difficult — if not impossible — to find someone to deliver the food.
+ If you are willing to be a substitute driver — let us know; you can specify the days/routes when you will be available. We will usually call no later than the day before we need you. We understand you will not be available every time we call. We appreciate the times you can fill in for someone else!
Please call Lisa – 256-382-0920 – to learn more!
