Basketball History

Basketball was invented in 1891 by Jim Naismith, a physical education teacher at the YMCA International Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts. Since the class he taught were confined to the indoors in the severe winter months, Naismith was tasked to come up with a game that could be played indoors.  He was successful in creating “basketball” and the first game was played with a soccer ball and two peach baskets.

The sport caught on and spread from the YMCA to colleges.  The college level formed professional basketball leagues. The game gained popularity and, in 1936, basketball became an Olympic sport. Today, the National Basketball Association (NBA) is one of the most popular professional sports leagues in the world.
