Senior Employment Program

The Senior Employment Program is a federally funded training program for seniors. Its mission is to enable older persons to achieve gainful employment and personal development through community service employment and training. The purpose is to provide useful part-time community-service assignments for persons 55 years of age or older with low incomes, while promoting their transition to unsubsidized employment.
TARCOG'S Senior Employment Program is operated under a US Dept of Labor grant and in cooperation with Senior Service America, Inc. and Alabama Department of Senior Services.

In order to participate in the program:

  • You must be 55 years of age or older.
  • Your income must not exceed 125 % of the federal poverty level.
  • You must reside in one of the five counties in the TARCOG region. (These counties are DeKalb, Jackson, Limestone, Madison and Marshall.)
  • You must be unemployed at the time of application.

Eligible seniors are enrolled in the program and assigned to government or non-profit (501-c-3) agencies in their communities that have agreed to serve as training sites. Enrollees train at these agencies 19 ¾ hours each week and earn $5.21 an hour. While training at these agencies, enrollees receive on-the-job training, learn new skills, update old skills, and get work experience that will help prepare them to reenter the workforce. Enrollees must agree to continue to actively seek employment while on the program.
